Orlando Solar Bears 3, Kansas City Blades 2 (SO)
ORLANDO--Mark Beaufait assisted on two goals by Dave Chyzowski, then scored in the shootout to lead the Orlando Solar Bears (8-7-2) to a 3-2 come-from-behind win over the Kansas City Blades (7-6-3) Saturday night. A crowd of 8,256 was on hand at Orlando Arena as the Solar Bears snapped a four-game winless streak. Orlando won the tiebreaker 2-0. Hubie McDonough scored the first shootout goal. Both of Chyzowski's scores, at 17:31 of the second period and 16 seconds into the third, came on power plays. The Blades took a 2-0 lead on Dale Craigwell's first period goal and a power play tally by David Bruce early in the second. The Blades outshot Orlando 40-23, but were frustrated by goalie David Littman, who finished with 38 saves, as well as the tiebreaker shutout. Kansas City netminder Jon Casey made 21 saves.
Cincinnati Cyclones 6, Milwaukee Admirals 1
CINCINNATI--Pat MacLeod scored twice, and goalie Geoff Sarjeant came up with a season-high 39 saves, to lead the Cincinnati Cyclones (9-4-3) past the Milwaukee Admirals (11-7-0) 6-1 in a Saturday night battle of IHL division leaders at The Crown. Gilbert Dionne started things off for the Central Division frontrunners, scoring in the thirteenth minute of the first period. Mike Casselman and Don Biggs scored in the second to give Cincinnati a 3-0 lead. Todd Hawkins and MacLeod added third-period goals. Todd Simon assisted on four Cyclones tallies, and Dionne, Casselman, Biggs and MacLeod had one assist each. Joe Frederick spoiled Sarjeant's third shutout of the season with 4:48 to play, off an assist by Jeff Nelson. The goal was Frederick's 18th of the season. Danny Lorenz was in goal for the Admirals, and stopped 17 of the Cyclones' 23 shots.
Manitoba Moose 4, Indianapolis Ice 2
INDIANAPOLIS--The Manitoba Moose (8-9-1) snapped a three-game losing streak Saturday by defeating the Indianapolis Ice 4-2 in front of 7,799 at Market Square Arena. Brett Punchard and Brad Purdie each had a goal and an assist to pace the Manitoba attack. Kent Fearns' fourth goal of the season, on a power play 16:35 into the third period, won the game, and Jason Christie put an insurance tally into an empty net in the final minute. The Ice (6-11-0) battled back from an early two-goal deficit, tying the score with power play goals by Martin Gendron in the second period and Alfie Turcotte in the third. Mnaitoba goalie Fred Brathwaite held off a 41-shot attack, making 39 saves to preserve the win. Kurt Daubenspeck turned away 29 of 32 as the Ice dropped their third straight.
Detroit Vipers 6, Fort Wayne Komets 4
FORT WAYNE, Ind.--Peter Ciavaglia had a shorthanded goal and two assists in the first period to help the Detroit Vipers (10-5-3) to a 6-4 win over the Fort Wayne Komets (6-9-0) Saturday in front of 7,373 at Memorial Coliseum. Dan Kesa scored the game-winner at 9:31 of the second period, off Scott Thomas' second assist of the game. Ian Herbers, John Gruden, Brent Fedyk and Ciavaglia scored to give Detroit a 4-2 first-period lead, and Fedyk capped the scoring in the third. Dan Currie and Robin Bawa scored for Fort Wayne in the first period. Tallies by Guy Dupuis and Ed Campbell kept the game close through the second period. Vipers goalie Jeff Reese held off a 48-shot Fort Wayne attack, making 44 saves. Richard Shulmistra stopped 14 of 20 in the losing effort.
Chicago Wolves 4, San Antonio Dragons 2
SAN ANTONIO--Steve Martins scored the winning goal and set up two others as the Chicago Wolves (11-4-2) beat the San Antonio Dragons (6-11-2) 4-2 Saturday in front of 3,345 at Freeman Coliseum. The deciding goal came on a power play eight minutes into the third period. Darren Tilley and Ravil Gusmanov scored for Chicago in the second, and Marc Potvin slid the fourth goal into an empty net with three seconds remaining. Steve Maltais and Robert Nardella chipped in with two assists apiece. Mike Craig's goal 7:04 into the game gave the Dragons a 1-0 lead that lasted through the first period. Reggie Savage also scored for San Antonio, at 1:14 of the third period. Winning goalie Wendell Young faced 31 shots and made 29 saves. Bruce Racine stopped 36 of 39 in the Dragons' second straight loss.
Utah Grizzlies 5, Las Vegas Thunder 0
WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah--The Utah Grizzlies (11-6-2) shut down the International Hockey League's second-best offense Saturday, defeating the Las Vegas Thunder (9-9-2) 5-0 in front of 10,131 at the "E" Center. John LeBlanc scored twice for the Grizzlies, in the first and third periods. Jeff Sharples and Fred Knipscheer netted goals within the first 4:12 of the second period to make the score 3-0, and Roman Vopat added a fourth goal early in the third. Knipscheer also assisted on both of LeBlanc's goals. Goalie Wade Flaherty stopped all 24 Las Vegas shots to post his second shutout, and the Grizzlies' third straight win. The Thunder's Manny Legace faced 25 shots and made 20 saves.
Long Beach Ice Dogs 3, Houston Aeros 2
LONG BEACH, Calif.--Andrei Vasilyev scored 3:08 into the third period to give the Long Beach Ice Dogs (14-6-1) a 3-2 win over the Houston Aeros (11-6-2) Saturday before 4,597 at Long Beach Arena. The winning goal extended Vasilyev's scoring streak to nine games, and gave Ice Dogs' coach John Van Boxmeer his 100th win. Russ Romaniuk opened the Ice Dogs' scoring 1:14 after the opening faceoff, with assists from Stephane Morin and Collin Bauer. Morin also helped set up a power play goal by Dan Lambert early in the second stanza. Brent Hughes and Jeff Tory scored for the Aeros. Long Beach goalie Jamie Storr needed only 13 saves to post the win. Houston's Ryan Bach stopped 27 of 30.
