Worry over presence of northern pike alleviated
Thursday, Nov. 13, 1997 | 9:13 a.m.
Biologists on Wednesday shocked an area near Painted Rock east of Reno, where an angler reported catching a nearly 10-pound northern pike in August.
Northern pike is an aggressive fish that feeds on other fish. Wildlife experts feared its presence in the lower Truckee River would threaten the federally protected Lahonton cutthroat trout and cui-ui of Pyramid Lake.
Electroshocking is used to stun fish so that biologists can determine what type of fish are in the water.
No northern Pike were found in the river.
"This is the best news," said fisheries biologist Mike Sevon. "If we were going to find pike in the river, this is the place we would find them."
