Coach's corner

From reader Dan Gutierrez:

I'm a 168 average bowler. Friends have told me that if I pick up my spares my game will improve and I could gain 10 to 15 pins on my average. Is this the case?

Dan, spares are one of the most important parts of the game. Making just one more spare per game could add 10 to 15 or even more pins on your average.

Learning to make good first shots will help leave easier spare shots. Learning or enhancing your spot bowling will improve your accuracy. Using the third arrow as a target for spares might be a good starting point. For the 7 pin move right. For the 10 pin move left. Try rolling your spare ball hard and straight. This will give you less chance for error and more room to pick up the spare.

The best way to improve spare shooting is to practice them. Each person has a different release. Trying to give exact information is difficult because of the different lane conditions, ball type and release points. But a a professional bowling instructor can help.

Call a bowling center or pro shop to find a teaching pro. That will be your best investment for learning the proper and easiest way for spare shooting. You will also improve other areas of the game which will give your average a big boost.
