Detroit Vipers 3, Michigan K-Wings 2 (SO)

KALAMAZOO, Mich.--Jimmy Carson, Brent Fedyk and Peter Ciavaglia scored in the shootout to give the Detroit Vipers a 3-2 win over the Michigan K-Wings Wednesday at Wings Stadium. The loss was Michigan's third straight by shootout--all by 3-2 scores--and drops them to 4-4-4. Detroit's record improves to 6-4-3, good for a tie with Orlando for first place in the Northeast Division. Fedyk and Dan Kesa led the way for the Vipers in regulation, each with one goal and one assist. Kesa's third-period tally tied the score 2-2 and forced the tiebreaker. Chris Tancill, Michigan's only scorer in the shootout, put the K-Wings on the board with a power play goal at 12:05 of the second period. Derrick Smith's goal in the opening minute of period three gave the K-Wings their only lead of the game. Veteran goalie Jeff Reese stopped 28 of the K-Wings' 30 shots to post the win. Michigan's Jordan Willis faced 33 shots and made 31 saves.

Cleveland Lumberjacks 8, Quebec Rafales 3

QUEBEC CITY--Brad Lauer, Joe Dzedzic and Chris Longo each scored twice to lead the Cleveland Lumberjacks to their third straight win, an 8-3 rout of the Quebec Rafales Wednesday before 4,071 at Le Colisee. Cleveland's record improves to 7-4-3, while the Rafales drop out of first place in the Northeast Division at 6-6-2. Lauer's goals, the first two of the game, came within a 17-second span of the first period. Dzedzic scored his first at 10:35, less than three minutes later, and Longo scored at 15:18 of the first period and 2:43 of the second to make the score 5-0. Dzedzic's second goal boosted the Jacks' lead to 6-0 before Dan Ratushny broke the Quebec drought at the 12:47 mark. Michel Mongeau matched Lauer's heroics with back-to-back goals in 35 seconds to bring the Rafales within three at the close of the second period. Dave Basseggio and Brett Harkins scored for Cleveland in the final period. The Lumberjacks outshot Quebec 40-26. Winning goalie Pat Jablonski finished with 23 saves, while Tom Draper snagged 32 for the Rafales.

Orlando Solar Bears 5, Milwaukee Admirals 3

MILWAUKEE--The Orlando Solar Bears (7-4-1) rallied from two goals down to defeat the Milwaukee Admirals (9-5-0) 5-3 Wednesday night. A Bradley Center crowd of 5,174 saw the Midwest Division leaders' three-game winning streak come to an end. Mark Beaufait, who put Orlando on the board in the eighth minute of the first period, scored the game-winner 30 seconds into the third. Hubie McDonough and Barry Dreger scored in the second period to tie the score 3-3, and Kevin Smyth added an insurance goal in the third, with the help of McDonough's second assist of the game. The win leaves Orlando tied with Detroit for first place in the Northeast Division. The Admirals led 2-1 at the end of a period, after goals by Steve Tuttle and Len Esau. Eric Fenton made the score 3-1 on a second-period power play. Goalie David Littman held off a 34-shot attack, making 31 saves to help Orlando to the win. Milwaukee netminder Mike Torchia stopped 16 of 21.

Houston Aeros 5, Utah Grizzlies 4 (SO)

WEST VALLEY CITY, Ut.--David Oliver scored twice in the third period and once in the shootout to lead the Houston Aeros (8-4-2) past the Utah Grizzlies (8-5-2) 5-4 Wednesday in front of 6,307 at the "E" Center. The win was the Aeros' sixth in eight road games, while the Grizzlies have dropped their last three, all at home. Houston won the four-round tiebreaker 2-0. Mike Maurice scored in the third minute of the second period to bring the Aeros into a 1-1 tie. Mark Freer's shorthanded goal at 7:56 gave Houston a short-lived lead. Oliver's first goal, less than a minute into the third period, tied the score at 3-3, and his power play tally with 27 seconds remaining sent the game to a shootout. Vladimir Orzagh scored Utah's first two goals, one in the first period and one in the second. The Grizzlies led 3-2 at the end of the second period, thanks to Chris Taylor's goal at 14:09, and Kip Miller added a third-period tally. Houston goalie Ryan Bach stopped 23 of 27 Utah shots, and headed off four shootout attempts, to win his first IHL start. Utah's Mark McArthur faced only 14 shots in regulation, and made 10 saves.
