Southern Conference soccer playoffs down to 4 teams

Green Valley, Cheyenne, Bishop Gorman and Cimarron-Memorial won first round matches this weekend at the Southern Conference soccer playoffs.

The Gators, unbeaten in 19 games this fall, dethroned defending state champ Bonanza, 2-1, in sudden death overtime. Rocky Bansin scored the game-winner for Green Valley and Ernesto Tenario put in the other goal. Bonanza had taken a 1-0 lead on a goal by Matt Lambert.

Cheyenne got by Silverado, 2-1, behind goals from Andy Romeo and Ricky Riley. The Skyhawks scored first in the match on a goal from James Wickman.

Gorman topped Chaparral, 2-1, getting late goals from Nick Arbalaez and Mike Diaz. The Cowboys scored their goal when Kevin Gamett early in the second half. Cimarron's Kevin Lunkwitz put home the winner in overtime to lead the Spartans past Valley, 2-1.

The semifinals are scheduled for Tuesday. Green Valley (17-0-2) meets Gorman (10-3-2) and Cimarron (10-4-2) tangles with Cheyenne (13-2-1). The winners qualify for the state tournament.
