Quebec Rafales 3, Michigan K-Wings 2 (SO)
KALAMAZOO, Mich.--In a carbon copy of Friday's result, the Quebec Rafales (6-3-2) edged the Michigan K-Wings 3-2 in a shootout Saturday before 2,720 at Wings Stadium. Marc Rodgers and Steve Larouche scored for Quebec in the tiebreaker. Goalie Tom Draper, who stopped a second-period penalty shot by Michigan's Tony Hrkac, held off four straight shootout attempts to seal the win. The Rafales trailed 2-1 through most of the third period, but scrambled back into the game at the 19:40 mark, on a six-on-four power play goal by Michel Mongeau. Defenseman Jeremy Mylymok also scored for the Rafales, in the first period. Tyler Wright scored 1:05 into the second period to pull the K-Wings (4-4-3) into a 1-1 tie, and Marty Flichel put Michigan in the lead at :40 of the third. Draper stopped 28 of Michigan's 30 shots in regulation. Manny Fernandez made 30 saves on 32 shots as the K-Wings dropped their fifth straight.
Grand Rapids Griffins 3, Cincinnati Cyclones 2 (SO)
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.--Brian Sullivan and Travis Richards scored in the shootout to give the Grand Rapids Griffins (6-5-0) a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones (6-2-3) Saturday in front of 10,834 at sold-out Van Andel Arena. Sullivan also assisted on Greg Clancy's first period goal. Mark Greig's power play tally at 13:51 of the third period tied the score at 2-2, sending the game to the tiebreaker. Kerry Huffman assisted on both Grand Rapids goals, extending his point-scoring streak to four games. Clancy has goals in his last two starts. Gilbert Dionne scored both Cincinnati goals, one in the first period and one in the third. The Cyclones were shut out in the tiebreaker to end their four-game winning streak. Grand Rapids goalie Ian Gordon made 31 saves in regulation, including a team-high 15 in the first period. Todd MacDonald turned away 23 of 25 shots for the Cyclones.
Orlando Solar Bears 4, Manitoba Moose 1
WINNIPEG--The Orlando Solar Bears (6-3-1) defeated the Manitoba Moose 4-1 Saturday to move into a first place tie with Quebec in the IHL's Northeast Division. A crowd of 5,434 was on hand at Winnipeg Arena as Solar Bears coach Curt Fraser picked up his 200th career win. Goalie David Littman made 42 saves for the Solar Bears, who were outshot 43-28. Orlando took command of the game with unanswered first-period goals by Eric Nickulas and Kevin Smyth. Manitoba's Randy Gilhen cut the lead to 2-1 with a power play goal in the second stanza, but the Solar Bears pulled away in the third with scores from Dave Chyzowski and Bill Armstrong. Fred Brathwaite made 25 saves in goal for the Moose, who fall to 5-6-0.
Indianapolis ICE 2, Fort Wayne Komets 1
FORT WAYNE, Ind.--Martin Gendron scored in the first minute of the game, and Alfie Turcotte in the last, to give the Indianapolis Ice (5-7-0) a 2-1 win over the Fort Wayne Komets (5-6-0) Saturday night. The Central Division rivals met in front of 7,077 at Memorial Coliseum. Turcotte assisted on Gendron's goal, which came just 39 seconds into the game, then sent the game-winner into an empty net at 19:06 of the third period. Robin Bawa saved Fort Wayne from the shutout with a power play tally with 21 seconds left in the game. Jani Hurme picked up the win in goal, with 34 saves on 35 Fort Wayne shots. Komets netminder Richard Shulmistra faced 28 shots, and finished with 26 saves.
Cleveland Lumberjacks 3, Houston Aeros 2
HOUSTON--Brett Harkins scored 1:42 into the third period to push the Cleveland Lumberjacks (5-4-3) past the Houston Aeros (7-4-2) 3-2 Saturday before 8,023 at the Compaq Center. The win was the Jacks' first in five starts, and snapped a three-game Houston winning streak. Cleveland's Brad Lauer scored the first goal of the game, at 1:11 of the first period, but the Jacks fell behind 2-1 by the intermission. Jason McBain tied the score with a second-period tally. Martin St. Louis and Lauer assisted on Harkins' deciding goal. David Oliver and Brent Hughes scored for the Aeros. Winning goalie Pat Jablonski stopped 32 of the 34 shots he faced. Houston's Peter Skudra made 28 saves on Cleveland's 29 shots.
Chicago Wolves 3, Kansas City Blades 3 (SO)
KANSAS CITY--Ravil Gusmanov tied the score at 3:24 of the third period, then put away a shootout goal to lead the Chicago Wolves (7-4-1) to a 3-2 win over the Kansas City Blades (5-6-1) Saturday before 6,121 at Kemper Arena. Doug Barrault scored the winning shootout goal, Chicago's second of the tiebreaker. The Wolves came back twice to tie the score in regulation. Dave Paradise's power play tally at 5:51 of the second period tied the score at 1-1. J.F. Quintin put Kansas City on the board 8:27 after the opening faceoff. Dean Sylvester scored in the second period, and John Purves in the shootout. Wendell Young stopped 28 of 30 shots to help the Wolves snap a three-game losing streak. Jeff Salajko snagged 25 of 27 in goal for Kansas City.
Milwaukee Admirals 4, Utah Grizzlies 2
WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah--The Milwaukee Admirals (8-4-0) scored three third-period goals to take a 4-2 win over the Utah Grizzlies (8-5-1) Saturday in front of 7,312 at the "E" Center. Milwaukee's Jeff Nelson broke a 1-1 tie with his sixth goal of the season, 35 seconds into the final period. Eric Fenton notched the game-winner at 15:40, and Joe Frederick scored his ninth of the season with barely one second to play. Mark Visheau started the Milwaukee scoring with a power play goal late in the second period. The Grizzlies led 1-0 at the end of one period, on a power play goal by John LeBlanc. Jeff Sharples also scored, in the third. Milwaukee goalie Danny Lorenz made 31 saves on 33 Utah shots. Wade Flaherty stopped 29 of 33 for the Grizzlies.
Long Beach Ice Dogs 6, San Antonio Dragons 2
LONG BEACH, Calif.--Russ Romaniuk led the way with two goals as the Long Beach Ice Dogs defeated the San Antonio Dragons 6-2 Saturday at the Long Beach Arena. The Ice Dogs' record improves to 10-5-1, including a five-game winning streak. The Dragons remain mired in the Southwest Division cellar at 4-7-2. Romaniuk's goals, at 3:03 of the first period and 7:07 of the second, started and ended a five-goal Long Beach run. Andrei Vasilyev, Victor Ignatjev and Stephane Morin also scored as Long Beach built up a 5-1 lead. Darryl Williams capped the win with his seventh goal of the year. IHL goal scoring leader Scott Hollis accounted for both San Antonio tallies. He has 15 goals in 13 games. Kay Whitmore picked up his eighth win of the season in goal. Bruce Racine took the loss for the Dragons.
