ROOT BEER FLOATS -- From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday there will be a Root Beer Float Scoop-a-thon at all Smith's Food and Drug Centers to benefit Miracle Flights for Kids, a program under the wings of Angel Plane. For $1, you will be able to purchase a root-beer float. All donations will be used to expand the service of free medical air transportation for critically ill children to medical facilities. POLICE VS. FIREFIGHTERS -- The fifth annual Police vs. Firefighters Charity Baseball Game will be at 7 p.m. June 6 at UNLV's Wilson Stadium. Proceeds from the event, sponsored by Bank of America, KVVU Channel 5 and KBGO 93.1-FM, will benefit Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Tickets are $3, or two for $5. Children under 6 are free with a paying adult. Tickets are available at the JDF office, 4220 S. Maryland Parkway, and at the stadium on the day of the event. Seventh-inning stretch activities will include a raffle drawing. For more information, call 732-3795.
CHILDREN'S MIRACLE NETWORK -- University Medical Center will benefit from the world's largest television fund-raiser when the 15th annual Children's Miracle Network Telethon is broadcast live from Disney World on Saturday and Sunday. The international fund-raiser benefits 5 million children throughout North America. It will be broadcast locally on KVVU Channel 5 beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday and continuing until 3 p.m. Sunday. The telethon is sponsored locally by the University Medical Center Foundation Inc. Last year the telethon raised more than $525,000 locally. All the local proceeds stay in Las Vegas and are used by the UMC Foundation to purchase pediatric health care equipment.
New officers
GOOD KNIGHTS -- Two Las Vegans were among the Knights of Columbus officers elected recently at the 87th annual state convention in Reno. Macedonio Iniquez is the new state secretary, and Bruce Jarzen the new state treasurer. Current State Deputy Dale Shoemaker of Las Vegas has been nominated for membership on the international board of directors. The Knights of Columbus is a fraternal family organization that has 4,000 members in Nevada.

AMERICAN HEART WALK -- The North Las Vegas Division of the American Heart Association's annual fund-raiser will begin at 7:30 a.m. June 7 at the Community College of Southern Nevada, Cheyenne campus. The noncompetitive 5K walk will be followed by a light breakfast and a drawing for donated prizes. There is no registration fee, but walkers are encouraged to get donations to support their participation. Sponsors for the 1997 North Las Vegas American Heart Walk include Sunrise Mountain View Hospital, Southern Nevada Investment Corp. and North Las Vegas Care Center.
RIDE FOR HOPE -- The Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation's Ride for Hope begins 11 a.m. June 22 at Easyriders of Las Vegas, 4600 W. Tropicana Ave., and ends with a party at The Beach nightclub, 365 Convention Center Drive. A $25 registration fee includes the ride and after-ride party, or you can pay $25 at the party. Proceeds will benefit the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation's first Camp Cartwheel, a summer day camp for children who have survived a life-threatening illness and for their siblings.
GOLF CLASSIC -- The annual Walter Pinjuv Classic golf tournament will be at 7 a.m. July 18 at the Legacy Golf Course. Sertoma is a service club working with speech- and hearing-impaired children. Nine students are on scholarship to college and seven are being sent to summer camp in Susanville, Calif. It is the source for the proceeds of the tournament. POKER RUN 1997 -- A Bikers Bringing Friends Hope charity run to raise money for the residents of Cheyenne Care Center, a long-term care and skilled facility, will be 8 a.m. June 29 at 2860 E. Cheyenne Ave. The run will begin with free doughnuts and coffee and end with a party at the Cheyenne Saloon, 3103 N. Rancho, which will include food, drinks, live band, raffle and bikini contest. Cost is $10 per bike or $15 per couple.
SWING AGAINST ARTHRITIS -- Take a swing against arthritis in the 10th annual Las Vegas Arthritis Foundation Golf Classic on Aug. 25 at the prestigious Canyon Gate Country Club. The day-long festivities will benefit the Las Vegas branch of the Arthritis Foundation. Entry fees are $200 per player and include green fees, golf cart rental, unlimited practice balls, a continental breakfast, awards luncheon, live auction and the opportunity to win prizes. Proceeds from this annual tournament support local services, programs and research to find a cure for the many forms of arthritis and to improve the quality of life for those affected by arthritis. CELEBRITY BILLIARDS -- The 1997 John Ratzenberger Celebrity Billiards Classic benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International will be from 6-9 p.m. Sunday at The Top of the Riv in the Riviera hotel-casino, featuring actor John Ratzenberger ("Cheers") and his friends from television, film and sports. CATHOLIC SCHOOL NEEDS -- Bishop Gorman High School, 1801 Maryland Parkway, is having a used-instrument drive this month. The music department is looking for musical instruments collecting dust in your closet. The school also could use many nonmusical items for its music department, such as a portable storage trailer, PA equipment, old stereo, CD tape decks, theater-lighting equipment, electric-extension cables, clothing racks or portable closets. SPRING SPRUCE-UP -- Volunteers from businesses, civic groups, churches and individual families are asked to give St. Jude's "One Day's Work" from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Everyone will enjoy a family-style picnic at 4 p.m. Some of the chores needing to be accomplished are painting of the children's cottages (outside), weeding, picking up litter, sweeping and general maintenance.
