Resolution urges keeping mobile home water rate

CARSON CITY -- A resolution urging the Las Vegas Valley Water District to continue to charge mobile home park residents the same rate as single family homeowners has been unanimously approved by the Assembly Commerce Committee.
Assemblywoman Genie Ohrenschall, D-Las Vegas, told the committee that many of the more than 139 mobile home parks in Clark County have a master water meter instead of individual meters at each space.
Under the rate schedule of the district, the higher the use the higher the rate. At present the district charges park residents the same rate as a homeowner.
Julie Wilcox, lobbyist for the water district, said the board of directors last summer decided to continue the lower rate until after a pilot program in which the district will pay for the conversion of five parks to allow a meter for every hookup. The district, she said, will see if that leads to greater conservation of water.
But Assemblywoman Barbara Buckley, D-Las Vegas, urged the district permanently adopt the lower homeowners rate for mobile home parks. Some of the older parks cannot be converted to individual meters without tearing out the whole water system.
