Mine shaft closed in Virginia City
Tuesday, May 20, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.
A contractor on Monday blasted what remains of the Osbiston shaft near Virginia City High School. Officials said the opening will now be filled in.
The abandoned shaft is a remnant from the region's mining heyday in the 1800's.
In the 1950s, junk cars were used to plug the hole and the site was used for decades as an unauthorized town dump.
In March of last year, the rock headframe collapsed, leaving a gaping hole. Officials hope the latest efforts to plub it up will stabilize the ground.
