Man sentenced to prison in drunken driving case
Tuesday, May 20, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.
That was the sentence handed down on Monday for Nicholas Mayfield by Washoe District Judge Deborah Agosti.
Joe and Barbara Archuleta, both 52, were visiting Reno last year for the annual Hot August Nights Event when they were run down while walking along North McCarran Avenue.
Mayfield, 26, admitted to drinking beer and tequila and smoking marijuana that day. He claimed he was leaning over in his car to retrieve a compact disc when his vehicle swerved and he struck the couple.
Agosti expressed sympathy for the victims' family. But she said other factors, including poor lighting and the victims' dark clothing, could have contributed to the accident.
