Las Vegas Stars scorecard
Friday, May 16, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.
Las Vegas Stars pitcher Jim Bruske pinch hit and recorded the game-winning RBI, laying down a suicide squeeze to score Jorge Velandia and give the Stars a 7-6 victory over the Calgary Cannons in 10 innings Thursday night at Cashman Field. With one out and runners at the corners, the Cannons moved an outfielder into the infield to defense the bunt, but Velandia easily scored when Bruske's bunt was fielded by losing pitcher Curtis Shaw. ... Todd Schmitt, for whom Bruske batted, threw two innings of shutout relief for the win, raising his record to 3-1. ... Reliever Chris Hook tied a Stars record by allowing four home runs in a game. Hook, who replaced the promoted Pete Smith to start the second inning, allowed five earned runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout in five innings. ... Left fielder Jim Tatum went 3-for-4 with three runs, extending his hit streak to 10 games -- a season high for the Stars. Tatum also scored a run in his fifth straight game, tieing a 1997 team high. However, he ended his string of games with a homer at four. ... Velandia extended his hit streak to nine games, while center fielder Doug Dascenzo pushed his to eight. ... Inning leadoff hitters are batting .350 against Stars pitching, including 10 of 19 (.526) the last two games.
