Letter: The term downtown comes from early days of the city
Thursday, May 15, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.
Ms. Dizenzo, in your letter you asked why downtown is north of the Strip, yet not called uptown. Downtown get this name from the day when there was no Strip, and Las Vegas Boulevard was called Fifth Street, when it was the main central area of the city, and it was "down" from everyone else in Las Vegas.
It's nice to see someone who actually cares about Las Vegas' rich history!
