Former UNLV standout Joe Boever struck out five Las Vegas Stars in three innings of relief to record the win for the Calgary Cannons at Cashman Field Wednesday night. The Stars struck out a total of 14 times en route to wasting an early three-run lead. ... Boever, who has pitched for Atlanta, Philadelphia, Houston, Oakland and Detroit since leaving the Rebels in 1982, raised his record to 2-2 and lowered his ERA 1.19 points to 5.40. ... Left fielder Jim Tatum extended his home run streak to four games and his hit streak to nine games with a two-run blast over the left-field wall off Cannons starter Sean Lawrence in the first inning. Outfielder Kevin McReynolds set the Stars record for consecutive home runs by hitting at least one in six straight games twice in 1983. ... Catcher Eric Helfand sent the first pitch of the fourth inning to the flag poles in right-center for his first homer of the season. ... Shortstop Jorge Velandia has hit in eight straight games, while center fielder Doug Dascenzo has hit in seven straight. ... Friday night is Veterans Night at Cashman. Veterans will be honored with a pregame ceremony starting at 6:30 p.m., highlighted by a proclamation by Gov. Bob Miller.

Tonight at 7:05, the Stars will send right-hander Pete Smith (3-2, 4.41) to face Calgary left-hander Jimmy Anderson (0-1,1.50) in the final game of the series.
In the first of a four-game home set against Albuquerque Friday at 7:05 p.m., Las Vegas right-hander Jim Bruske (3-1, 4.26) is scheduled to oppose Dukes right-hander Jody Treadwell (2-0, 5.40).
