Citing the area's rapid growth, Sprint announced it is looking for 250 skilled workers to join its Southern Nevada work force.
"Our growth truly has been phenomenal. It surprises us how fast we are growing," said Lou Emmert, vice president and general manager of Sprint Central Telephone-Nevada.
Among the new positions to be filled: cable maintenance workers, cable splicers, clerical workers, equipment people, frame people, installation and repair technicians, line assigners, sales representatives, customer service representatives and switch people.
Emmert said the positions will be filled immediately.
Currently, nearly 1,750 people work for Sprint locally, and the new positions will bring the work force to around 2,000.
"We're extremely delighted to add to our work force," Emmert said. "It helps the economy. It helps the company and it helps the individual."
Last month, Sprint connected its 750,000th local telephone line.
To celebrate that milestone, the local access provider donated a new telephone system to Opportunity Village, a nonprofit organization that provides vocational training, education, supported living and advocacy to the intellectually handicapped.
Since then, Sprint has added 11,000 more local telephone lines.
"We added 7,200 lines in April," Emmert said. "This is phenomenal growth for this type of industry, and we believe Las Vegas offers a fabulous market for our operations."
