Opponents of power line seeking study

The Regional Planning Commission was scheduled to consider Sierra Pacific Power Co.'s latest proposed route when it meets today.
Sierra Pacific wants to build the 164-mile long power line from Alturas, Calif., to Reno. In Reno, the line would cross 26 miles through the north valleys along the U.S. 395 corridor.
Planning commission staff say studies of proposed power lines were mandated last year. But that was a year after Sierra Pacific proposed its project, which is therefore exempt from the regulation.
Reno and Washoe County governments already have approved the route. The 345,000-volt line would still need approval from federal agencies and the state Public Service Commission.
