1917 - Omar Khayyam, ridden by Charles Borel, becomes the first foreign-bred colt to win the Kentucky Derby, with a two-length victory over Ticket. Omar Khayyam was bred in England.
1924 - Walter Hagen wins the PGA championship with a 2-up victory over Jim Barnes.
1970 - Ernie Banks hits his 500th home off Pat Jarvis in a 4-3 Cub win over Atlanta at Wrigley Field.
1974 - The Boston Celtics beat the Milwaukee Bucks 102-87 in Game 7 to win the NBA championship.
1982 - The United States Football League, a springtime league, is founded.
