Students celebrate history through art

For the seventh consecutive year, the Nevada Humanities Committee sponsored History Day in Nevada competitions in Las Vegas and Carson City.
The theme for 1997 was "Triumph and Tragedy in History." Students had the opportunity to create exhibits, give live performances, give media presentations or write papers.
First-place entries at the state level are eligible to compete in the National History Day event hosted by the University of Maryland in June.
The prize for the Best Entry on Native American History was won by Ryan Cuen of Garrett Middle School for his exhibit on Geronimo.
Erin Anderson of Garrett Middle School won the prize for the Best Entry on African American History with his exhibit on Harriet Tubman.

Grades 6-8
GROUP PERFORMANCE: First place, Carolyn Cremen, Keeli Fink, Rishi Chanderraj, Sarah Shiroff and Anita Batra of The Meadows School; second place, Patrick Hummel, Stephen St. John, Barry Bender, Ashley Cutter, and Logan Johnson of The Meadows School.
INDIVIDUAL EXHIBITS: First place, Dedree Larsen of Garrett Middle School; second, Justin Barrow of Garrett Middle School.
GROUP EXHIBITS: First place, Coleman Hutzler, Mike Paulus, James Ritter, Whitney Welch of The Meadows School; second, Alicia Capanna, Brian Robbins, Lauren Modosky of The Meadows School.
Grades 9-12
INDIVIDUAL EXHIBITS: First place, Jamie McNutt of Cimarron Memorial High School.
GROUP EXHIBITS: First place, Tracy Howard, Milene Sandoval of Cimarron Memorial High School; second, Tyler Bennett, Alexis Mitchell, Philip Pincock of Cimarron Memorial.
