* MOTHER'S DAY AT MUSEUM -- Children looking for a one-of-a-kind Mother's Day gift will be able to record a special message on cassette for their mothers on Sunday at the Lied Discovery Children's Museum, 833 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Mothers are invited to enter a 2 p.m. drawing for a bouquet donated by Patio Flower Shop. The recording session, noon to 3 p.m., is sponsored by KLUC 1140-FM. Disc jockey's Melanie McKay and Bo Jaxon will help visitors create their Mother's Day greetings. All mothers will be admitted free to the museum. Call 382-3445 for more information.
* BANDS AND CARS -- The Battle of the Bands and Car Show will be 2-7 p.m. May 24 at Durango High School, 7100 W. Dewey Drive. Cost is $10 and includes one drink and food ticket. There will be cash prizes and gift certificates to the top two bands. Prizes to cars will be for the best paint job and detail, best sound, best overall and biggest wreck. Auto entry fees are $10. * AFL-CIO SCHOLARSHIPS -- The Nevada State AFL-CIO awarded their Jim Arnold Sr. Scholarship Award to Las Vegas resident Amy Brunet, who received a $2,000 check to support her higher education. Amy will graduate this year from Bonanza High School and will attend UNLV. Her father, Michael Brunet, is a member of the Culinary Local Union No. 226. Scholarship winners were required to write an essay on the history of the labor movement.
* PRSA SEMINAR -- The Desert Sands Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America is sponsoring a media relations seminar for nonprofit organizations from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 16 at the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road. Cost for the seminar is $30, which includes materials and lunch. The seminar will provide information about understanding how the media operates, establishing good media relations, producing press releases, handling crisis communication and making public appearances. * FREE ASTHMA SCREENING -- Free asthma screening for adults and children will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 17 inside the Meadows Mall in front of Macy's. The program is designed to promote early detection and treatment of asthma, a disease that affects more than 12 million Americans and kills at least 5,000 each year. The program is sponsored by the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, Dr. Joram Seggev and University Medical Center. For more information, call 384-5373.
* ARMY ACHIEVEMENT MEDAL -- Army Pfc. Matthew Luttinen has been decorated with the Army Achievement Medal. The medal is awarded to soldiers for meritorious service, acts of courage or other outstanding accomplishments. The private received the medal for serving a tour in the peace-keeping mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina, a republic of the former Yugoslavia. The soldier is a 1995 graduate of Western High School.
