John McCarron: Cox prevails in Mahoney’s Wild Dog match

SCOTT COX held on to a four pin to win the Wild Dog Match Play Tournament at Mahoney's Bowling Center Saturday. Cox's 299, 1571 ($400) outscored David Haynes 1567 ($240). Taking third was tough senior player John Cocchi while fourth went to Russ Davies. Steve Born rolled the high game, a perfect 300.
The next Nevada Tournament Bowlers Alliance tournament is scheduled 10 a.m. Sunday at The Orleans. Entry fee is $65. Call manager Mike Monyak at 365-7400 for information.

Schwartz stop
Chris Schwartz, 243, ($200) won the winter Gold Coast Shootout Championship, defeating Brian Knew, 218 ($145) and George Kefali, 214 ($80). Other top places: Chris Kaiser ($60), Robert Brady Jr. ($37), Jay Nakaya ($37), Sean McCarffrey ($37), Loni Walton ($37).
The Summer Shootout starts tonight at 11:30 with a $25 entry fee. Call tournament director Jason Gupton at 367-4700 for details.
Senior scratch
The Senior Scratch Bowlers Tour went to veteran John Greco, who scored a 1201 ($260) at Sunset Lanes. Greco also teamed with East Coast veteran Tony Marine to take the doubles event with a 2259 ($110), outlasting the team of Lee Lamont and Wilt Tate 2251 ($70). Other top positions included: Dean Brennan 1179 ($125), Lee Lamont 1156 ($100), John Cocchi 1116 ($85), Wilt Tate 1095 ($70), Bud Horn 1081 ($55), Ron Kolch 1062 ($45) and Tony Marine 1058 ($40). Duane Alberts (1049) and Darwin Purvis (1020) won $40 each in the super senior division.
The next event will be at the Santa Fe, May 18 at 10 a.m. Call tournament director Gary Walters at 646-8466 for information.
Summer leagues
The winter season is ending at most centers, bringing an opportunity to compete in another league or bowl in another center for the summer. Don't get shut out -- join early to get in the league of your choice.
