1904 - Cy Young of the Red Sox pitched a perfect game against the Philadelphia Athletics, beating Rube Waddell 3-0.
1952 - Pittsburgh Pirates farmhand, Ron Necciai of the Bristol Twins, threw a no-hitter and struck out 27 batters in a 7-0 victory over the Welch Miners in the Class D Appalachian League.
1966 - The Montreal Canadiens beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 to win the Stanley Cup in six games.
1969 - The Boston Celtics beat the Los Angeles Lakers 107-102 to win the NBA championship for the 10th time in 11 years. Player-coach Bill Russell retired as a player.
1973 - Secretariat, ridden by Ron Turcotte, won the Kentucky Derby in a record 1:59 2-5, beating Sham by 2 1/2 lengths. Secretariat went on to win the Triple Crown.
1978 - Pete Rose of the Reds became the 14th player to collect 3,000 hits when he singled in the fifth inning against Montreal's Steve Rogers at Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium.
