Letter Museum’s Earth Day exhibit destroyed the spirit of the observance

Monday, May 5, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.

This year, we all attended again, hoping to have an exciting time. There were many booths that were there from last year, however, we didn't expect to come across a booth celebrating Earth Day in such a manner as we all had the unexpected misfortune to witness.

At the Natural Museum of History booth, we all stopped, and a very nice young man was talking to a couple of adults. The kids crowded around to see what he was doing and, as the children watched in shock, he cut up real cows' eyeballs. The children were very disgusted and upset as they talked about it the remainder of the day. I, even as a teacher, couldn't justify what purpose it served nor did I feel this was appropriate under the guise of Earth Day.

We all went away somewhat somberly after what we had seen. I suggested it would be a good idea to write a letter to voice our opinion in the hopes that next year the Natural Museum of History will use discretion as to what young children would like to see, restoring the wonderful feeling we all took with us at last year's Earth Day.
