Baseball and track playoffs this week
Monday, May 5, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.
Baseball and track and field have reached their postseasons, and the other spring sports will join them soon.
Green Valley and Bishop Gorman are the top seeds for the Southern Nevada Class 4A Zone baseball tournament, a three-day event beginning Thursday afternoon at two sites.
The four-time defending state champion Gators, the Sunrise Division champions, are up against Silverado, the Sunset's fourth seed, at 7 p.m. Thursday at Eldorado High School. That game is preceded at 4 p.m. by Durango, the No. 2 seed from Sunset, and Sunrise No. 3 Chaparral.
Gorman, the Sunset Division champion, takes on Sunrise No. 4 Las Vegas at 7 p.m. Thursday at Durango. At 4 p.m., Sunrise No. 2 Rancho meets Sunset No. 3 Cimarron-Memorial.
The double-elimination tournament continues Friday at two sites, and concludes Saturday at Durango.
Durango also is hosting the Class 4A Zone preliminaries in track and field Wednesday. The finals are Saturday at Durango.
Cheyenne's boys and girls won the Sunset Division titles last weekend. Rancho's boys and Green Valley's girls captured Sunrise Division titles.
Tuesday afternoon marks the end of the regular softball season, but the biggest game this week is being played today. Cheyenne can secure the fourth and final Sunset Division playoff spot if it beats Bishop Gorman at Jaycee Park.
Green Valley, Eldorado, Basic and Chaparral already have earned postseason berths in the Sunrise Division. Silverado, Cimarron and Bonanza will represent the Sunset Division, and will be joined by either Cheyenne or Durango, which could advance if the Desert Shields lose today and then Tuesday at Durango.
The double-elimination zone softball tournament is May 13-15 at Sunset Park.
In boys' volleyball, five games remain in the regular season. The two featured matches this week are Wednesday night, both in the Sunset Division. League leader Bonanza visits second-place Bishop Gorman and Cheyenne is at Cimarron in a battle of third-place teams.
The boys' regular season in golf ends Thursday afternoon, and the division championships in swimming -- as well as diving -- are scheduled Saturday at UNLV. The Sunset meet and diving finals are 10 a.m. The Sunrise meet starts at 3 p.m.
