'Master Gardeners' overcome arid climate
"Las Vegas, with its arid climate and extreme temperatures, is so different from any place I've lived I was overwhelmed by the gardening challenges," Cesaretti said.
The Laughlin River Run
Roaring bursts of speed down Casino Drive peppered the underlying growls as revelers at the largest Harley-Davidson run west of the Mississippi exercised a regressive-adolescent machismo.
Hitting the million mark
Prior to the start of the 28th Annual World Series of Poker at Binion's Horseshoe, a dejected former world champion Tom McEvoy sat down with his financial backer and said: "If I were you, I'd fire me."
Columnist Dean Juipe: Domed stadium skeptics may have been right
Many feel it's overdue, that it's obvious the downtown Las Vegas domed stadium isn't going to be built and that developmental manager Paul Tanner may as well come out and say so.
Columnist Jeff German: Panaro question mark in mob case
Rumors are focusing on Robert Panaro, one of nine defendants in a federal racketeering indictment returned last month, as the investigation steps up.
Columnist Ken Ward: Diversity gets short shrift in UNLV grants
But the undisputed reality is that our society embraces a multitude of cultures. It always has, and it will continue to do so as long as our economy is a global one.
Where I Stand: Prevailing wage law good for workers and Silver State
I must admit that their leadership sometimes isn't of the same high quality as the products the workers bring forth. A good example is their union's shortsighted view of campaigning for nuclear waste being dumped in Nevada. Biker fraternity converges on riverside town
"Welcome, bikers!" reads a sign in one window. It's a hot, dry Saturday, and you can't hear yourself ogling the half-naked women over the throaty, flatulent bbbrrraaappp! as bikers goose their Harley-Davidsons. The exhaust from thousands of motorcycles mingles with the tangy aroma from piles left by the burros that wander Oatman's streets with the impunity of sacred cows or tourist attractions.
Let charter schools face a key test
Senate Bill 220 would allow Nevada to experiment with the charter school concept with up to 25 campuses statewide and no more than 12 in one school district. Hopefully, it will end the arguments over whether the schools are superior to public education.
