Indian Center, CCSN host cultural festival
Friday, March 21, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.
Seven days of events will be held at CCSN's Cheyenne campus, featuring film festivals, environmental art exhibits, powwows and glimpses into sacred ceremonies such as the Sweat Lodge.
Celebrities from such movies as "Dances With Wolves" and the "Last of the Dog Men" will support the Indian Center's annual fund-raiser, "Honor the Elders," by serving as emcees.
In addition to traditional powwow events and food booths, athletes from many tribes will be participating in the sacred relay, a series of baton-passing marathons. Children will be encouraged to play in many Indian games, including lacrosse, an ancient form of warrior training that evolved into a sport.
"We hope to promote understanding and respect for all cultures by hosting these events," said Graham. "It is only through celebrations that we can truly appreciate ourselves and our neighbors."
The Las Vegas Indian Center is the largest nonprofit organization supporting Indians in Southern Nevada. Proceeds from the event will help provide emergency shelter assistance, vocational preparedness training and family enrichment programs.
For more information regarding the events, call Loretta Graham, 436-5366, or Tom Flores, 651-4373.
