Nevada Gov. Bob Miller turned on the tap, opening a new pipeline and reservoir to supply the Las Vegas Valley with water.
Flanked by local water officials Thursday, Miller noted that substantial construction on the "second straw" from Lake Mead was completed 18 months after construction began.
Southern Nevada Water Authority General Manager Pat Mulroy, SNWA Chairman Mary Kincaid and Colorado River Commission Chairwoman Janet Rogers attended the ceremonies.
The River Mountains project southeast of Las Vegas is part of the water authority's phased plan to expand water treatment capacity and delivery to the Las Vegas Valley.
The Colorado River Commission originally designed and administered the tunnel and several other local water projects. The CRC's projects were transferred to the water authority on Jan. 1, 1996.
