Letter: Hoover Dam bypass should use south route
Thursday, March 13, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.
I was happy to see Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev., pushing for the long-awaited bridge over the Colorado River. The trouble is, however, it appears that the most favorable route, the one that bypasses the dam and Boulder City to the south is being shelved because of the greater risk to endangered species in the Lake Mead National Recreation area. How ridiculous can you get? Just think of the possible scenario: 18-wheeler goes out of control crossing the dam, blows up, causes major damage to the structure, kills many people, all because of an endangered species.
How long are we going to let the endangered species people and their tortoises, one-eyed moths, horned frogs, or whatever, tell us what to do when we know better. It's long past overdue to do away with their organization and EPA so we can develop our property as we wish.
