Judge strikes down request for injunction against Strip smut law

Tuesday, March 4, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.

"Today's ruling is a testament to the strength of this legislation," said Commissioner Lorraine Hunt.

The distributors have been attacked for pushing the fliers advertising outcall entertainers and other adult-oriented businesses onto visitors whether they want them or not.

County officials claim the material often ends up as crumpled litter in gutters or on sidewalks. Some claim the sexually-oriented material is just too offensive to stay a part of the new family-oriented Las Vegas.

U.S. District Judge Lloyd George had already granted a restraining order that prohibited distributors from being arrested or prosecuted for violating the new ordinance, although Metro Police could still issue citations.

Handbillers had asked the judge to issue a preliminary injunction that would make the injunction permanent until a trial could be held.
