Some safety tips provided by the National Council on Fireworks Safety and other organizations:
* DON'T: Because of the potential dangers of fireworks, some safety organizations list just one tip regarding the devices: Don't use them. If you can't adhere to that suggestion, read on.
* PRECAUTIONS: Always read and follow label directions before igniting a firework. Never combine fireworks or attempt to make your own. Avoid using fireworks that have leaking powder or loose fuses.
* SUPERVISION: Always have a sober adult supervise fireworks activities. Never give a firework to a child. Never throw a lit firework at another person. Never carry unlit fireworks in your pocket.
* PURCHASE: Buy only from reliable fireworks retailers. In Southern Nevada, that would be charity booths set up around the valley.
* IGNITING: Always light fireworks outdoors. Have plenty of water available. Ignite only one at a time. Never shoot a firework out of a bottle or metal container. Never reignite a dud.
* STORAGE: Store unused fireworks in a cool, dry place or dispose of them in a proper manner.
