Letter: Make kids clean up their messy graffiti

Saturday, June 28, 1997 | 11:59 a.m.

Forty years ago my little girl was 3 years old. She marked up a wall with crayons. I explained how wrong it was, then gave her a wet soapy washcloth and made her wash it off. She cried all the while she was washing it, but she never did that again.

Kids who do the graffiti and tagging have the minds of 3-year-olds. So you must punish them by making them clean up their artwork. Either by painting over it, washing or whatever. I guarantee you that after doing that a few times, they will think twice before tagging again.

The same with vandalism. If they are caught, make them clean up the mess they made and then pay for the damage or do community work.

Slapping their wrists and making them sit in jail a couple days would not have an effect on them that making them right their wrong would have.
