SUN STAFF REPORT
Hard-throwing relief pitcher Marc Kroon was the lone Las Vegas Stars player named to the National League team for the Triple-A All-Star Game in Des Moines, Iowa, on July 9.
Kroon, a 24-year-old right-hander, is 1-0 with seven saves and a 1.90 earned-run average in 23 appearances for the Stars. In 23 2/3 innings, Kroon has 32 strikeouts and only seven walks and has not allowed a home run. He also has a string of 11 2/3 scoreless innings in his past 11 appearances.
The Triple-A All-Star Game features players from all three triple-A leagues -- the Pacific Coast League, International League and American Association. The players are divided into National League and American League teams based upon their major-league affiliation.
While Kroon was the only member of the Las Vegas Stars selected, he is not the only player with ties to Las Vegas who will be playing in the game. Former Stars outfielder Roberto Petagine, now with Norfolk of the IL, was named to the National League team.
Tim Johnson of Iowa (American Association) will manage the National League team while Edmonton Trappers skipper Gary Jones will head the American League squad.
