Tyson camp wants ref thrown out
Thursday, June 26, 1997 | 11:48 a.m.
For whatever undisclosed reason, Mike Tyson's handlers have objected to the selection of Mitch Halpern as referee for Tyson's rematch with Evander Holyfield Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden.
Tyson's co-managers, John Horne and Rory Holloway, presented Nevada State Athletic Commission chairman Dr. Elias Ghanem with a letter stating their official opposition to Halpern on Wednesday.
The NSAC will meet today to resolve the question.
"I don't know why, but they've lodged an official protest," said NSAC executive director Marc Ratner.
Halpern worked the first Holyfield-Tyson fight last Nov. 9 and seemingly came through with high marks. The NSAC selected him to work the rematch at its meeting Friday.
