INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- Madame Pandit, with Eddie Delahoussaye aboard, used a late drive to win the $68,420 Jim Newman Stakes by three lengths Wednesday at Hollywood Park.
Strawberry Morn, under Gary Stevens, finished second, a head in front of Avenue of Gold, with Corey Nakatani, in the field of eight fillies and mares 3-years-old and up. Favored Southern Spring finished fourth.
Madame Pandit covered 6 1/2 furlongs over a fast track in 1:14 2-5. She earned $40,600 for the win, paying out $13, $6.20 and $3.40. Strawberry Morn returned $8.20 and $4.40 and Avenue of Gold paid $3.80 to show.
Carrying 117 pounds, Madame Pandit broke slowly but took the lead at the turn, dueling outside Avenue of Gold, under 120 pounds, to midstretch before kicking clear. Strawberry Morn, carrying 116 pounds, stumbled out of the gate, then also battled outside Avenue of Gold in deep stretch to place.
