Delta flight returns to Las Vegas airport because of warning light

Thursday, June 26, 1997 | 11:48 a.m.

The plane, carrying 149 passengers and a crew of seven, landed safely. No injuries were reported.

There was no fire, according to McCarran spokesman Adam Mayberry. The problem was blamed on a faulty switch.

The plane, flight 594, departed the Las Vegas airport shortly after 7 a.m. PDT and was bound for Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

Mayberry said the fire warning light went on about 10 minutes into the flight and the decision was made to return to Las Vegas.

He said the plane dumped some of its fuel while several thousand feet in the air before returning to McCarran.

"The plane needed to dump the fuel to get rid of extra weight so it could land safely," Mayberry said. "The fuel evaporated in the air and never reached the ground."
