Where You Stand for June 17, 1997

Reading about the Medicare reform in this evening's paper: It's time that all the elected officials in Washington conform to the same regulations regarding medical expenses as us peons. With all their perks canceled, I believe the budget could be balanced in short order.

I read your article "Restoring natural quiet" and noticed that no matter what the attempted solutions proposed, the environmentalists had a problem with the airplanes. It was not the noise with the solar-powered air ships; it was the visual impact. It seemed to me that the fact this is one of the most visited natural attractions, I doubt you could go a day walking without seeing evidence of man. At least airplanes and blimps don't litter or ride overloaded, tired donkeys down trails. I guess to appease these so-called environmentalists, we should seal everything in plastic like grandma's 100-year-old like-new couch. Oh, but that's right, plastic's not environmentally friendly. I guess it comes down to no one should enjoy the park. When I have children, I'm sure they will be disappointed.

My topic is on the city election between Larry Brown and the sore loser, Matthew Callister. I feel that Matthew Callister should just go on and accept the loss and stop being a sour grape. He should just accept it.

Matt Martin

I don't know what Matthew Callister is complaining about losing the election. He said in the June 4 paper, "I'm free at last, this is a good thing. I'm glad to be out of this nonsense." If he's glad to be out of this nonsense, then I would suggest that he lose gracefully and give it up.

I was wondering why they can't have all the schools open 12 months instead of having some of the schools sit empty in the summertime. And we have to build new schools and more schools. Why not make good use of the ones we have and use them all year long?
