Helfand’s big bat powers LV’s rout

TACOMA, Wash. -- Eric Helfand drove in four runs and Las Vegas' bullpen turned in four perfect innings as the Stars routed Tacoma 10-3 Monday night at Cheney Stadium.

Helfand keyed the Stars' five-run second inning with a three-run double and singled home another run in Las Vegas' four-run fourth. Doug Dascenzo was 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored as the Stars pounded five Tacoma pitchers for 13 hits.

Stars starter Marino Castillo (2-3) allowed three runs on eight hits and walked five in five innings before giving way to Brian Drahman to start the sixth. Drahman retired all six batters he faced, newcomer Steve Mintz worked a perfect eighth and Marc Kroon set down the Rainiers in order in the ninth to preserve the win.

Prior to the game, the Stars received outfielder Trey Beamon from the San Diego Padres. Beamon had spent the past six weeks with San Diego after being called up from Las Vegas. The Stars also placed Derek G. Lee on the disabled list after the outfielder reinjured his hamstring.

The Stars and Rainiers conclude the series and the first half of the season this afternoon at 12:35. Las Vegas returns to Cashman Field on Wednesday for an eight-game homestand with Tucson and Tacoma.
