"He loved the motorcycle unit and what they accomplished," Sheriff Dick Kirkland said on Friday. "I'm personally certain that if he could do it all over again he would fight to get that assignment."
Minnie, 44, was responding to a trespassing call last Friday when he fell from his department motorcycle on Interstate 80 near Boomtown west of Reno. He died two days later at Washoe Medical Center.
Authorities don't know what caused Minnie to lose control of the bike.
Gov. Bob Miller also spoke briefly at the services, held at Lawlor Events Center. Burial followed at Mountain View Cemetery.
To allow employees to attend the funeral, the sheriff's department cut back on some services. The records section will be closed, but the civil section accepted papers in the morning for service later in the day.
The Nevada Highway Patrol and Reno and Sparks police volunteered to respond to emergencies in the county's jurisdiction during the day.
