Pahrump substitute teacher arraigned on sex charges

Friday, June 6, 1997 | 5:47 a.m.

A preliminary hearing for Brian Eugene Lepley was set for June 13.

Lepley was charged Thursday with sexual assault; attempted sexual assault; soliciting a minor to commit sodomy; attempting to solicit a minor to engage in sodomy; open or gross lewdness and attempted open or gross lewdness. He is also charged with three counts of supplying marijuana to minors and two counts of providing alcohol to minors.

Nye County District Attorney Bob Beckett said Lepley could be sentenced to life in prison for the sexual assault charge.

Authorities are still awaiting test results to determine if Lepley is HIV-positive. Beckett said there is evidence that Lepley has tested positive for the virus that causes AIDS.

All of the charges stem from accusations that Lepley solicited sodomy from a 16-year-old boy.

On May 23, Lepley allegedly took the boy to Tecopa Hot Springs, Calif., bound him in chains and committed various sex acts on him.

Since then, Beckett said three or four other boys have come forward, charging that Lepley supplied them with alcohol and marijuana and then tried to get them intoxicated so he could take advantage of them sexually.

Bail for Lepley was set Thursday at $82,000. He was also appointed a public defender.
