Letter: Letter writer doesn’t address homeowner headaches

Friday, June 6, 1997 | 5:47 a.m.

It has been kind of the SUN to give endless coverage to the ongoing homeowners association problems. However, I must question what Pugh was attempting to convey.

She did not cite any possible existing adversity in Greenbriar. What she did itemize was what "is" -- or should be -- the norm in any association as to employed management, their board size, maintaining sewer systems, etc. We have monthly board meetings in our clubhouse at no extra cost. Our monthly bulletins are hand-delivered to each of our 216 units by several volunteer block captains; no postage required.

None of the aforementioned cause the "real" problems. It is indeed the "dictatorial tyrants" of boards who slap owners with arbitrary fines. Threatening letters are mailed containing harassments and cruel attitudes. As to "advance" notices for fines to take effect, how about "tomorrow" and no offers to possibly discuss the problem(s) in an adult fashion?

It is too bad Pugh has not attended our group's meetings in order to be apprised of sad examples of physical and mental abuse experienced by the over now 325 owners who have contacted our co-chairpersons as well as the countless calls to Sen. Michael Schneider, D-Las Vegas, the attorney general's office, Ken McCall (the SUN's most compassionate and caring columnist), U.S. Rep. John Ensign, Sen. Richard Bryan, Las Vegas Councilman Arnie Adamsen and no doubt other political pundits who could not help because associations are "out of my jurisdiction because you are "private." Fortunately these parties are now becoming aware of just how dire the situation is in associations.
