City trying new tact for job-seekers
Friday, June 6, 1997 | 5:48 a.m.
For years, the homeless have gathered along a stretch of Bonanza Road, west of the downtown area, hoping to be selected for menial jobs.
The area has long been known as a location where contractors and others can pick up day laborers looking for a few hours work at minimum wage.
But the scenario has caused problems, with aggressive transients darting into traffic, crossing from one side of the busy street to the other, trying to hook up with motorists who stop to find workers.
On Monday, the Las Vegas City Council will consider an ordinance to once again try to legislate the transient stop and other such sites out of existence.
The city plans to use $10,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds to construct a day worker station on Nevada Department of Transportation land at Bonanza and H Street.
City officials hope they can get the transients to use the location when seeking work, rather than fanning out along the street for several blocks.
