Brent Mathewson said he chose to resign rather than to risk harming the community of Amargosa, the Pahrump Valley Times reported.
Mathewson was arrested last month on a charge of domestic battery after allegedly striking a relative during a reception for Mathewson's daughter.
It was while he was in custody that the old conviction was discovered. And that prompted Nye County Clerk Arte Robb to pull Mathewson's voter registration since ex-felons can't vote.
The town board was pondering his future on that panel when Mathewson said it would be easier all around if he stepped down.
He also said in this letter of resignation that the conviction was for possession with intent to sell marijuana in 1977. He said he receive five years' probation and has had no trouble with the law since.
