* POLICE VS. FIREFIGHTERS -- The fifth annual Police vs. Firefighters Charity Baseball Game will be at 7 p.m. Friday at UNLV's Wilson Stadium. Proceeds from the event, sponsored by Bank of America, KVVU Channel 5 and KBGO 93.1-FM, will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Tickets are $3, or two for $5. Children under 6 are admitted free with a paying adult. Tickets are available at the JDF office, 4220 S. Maryland Parkway, and at the stadium on Friday. * MEDICAL SOCIETY GOLF TOURNEY -- The Clark County Medical Society raised more than $8,000 from its recent Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament at the Tournament Players Club at the Canyons. Proceeds benefit the Clark Medical Society's Scholarship Fund, which awards scholarships to medical and nursing students from Clark County. The major sponsor of the event was Columbia Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center with a $2,500 donation. Sponsors donating $1,500 each included Aspen/Salls Church Insurance, Desert Radiologists/Nevada Radiation Oncology Centers, St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance and St. Rose Dominican Hospital.

* FLOOD VICTIMS HELPED -- Opportunity Village, an organization for advocacy of people with mental retardation, has responded to the plight of handicapped flood victims in North Dakota. Opportunity Village has donated a cash gift of $1,000 and 50 pairs of brand new jeans to help North Dakotans with mental retardation whose lives have been disrupted by the flooding. * AMERICAN HEART WALK -- The North Las Vegas Division of the American Heart Association's annual fund-raiser will begin at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at the Community College of Southern Nevada, Cheyenne campus. The noncompetitive 5K walk will be followed by a light breakfast and a drawing for donated prizes. There is no registration fee, but walkers are encouraged to get donations to support their participation. To register for the walk or to get more information, call the American Heart Association office at 367-1366. Sponsors for the 1997 North Las Vegas American Heart Walk include Sunrise Mountain View Hospital, Southern Nevada Investment Corp. and North Las Vegas Care Center.

* RIDE FOR HOPE -- The Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation's Ride for Hope begins 11 a.m. June 22 at Easyriders of Las Vegas, 4600 W. Tropicana Ave., and ends with a party at The Beach nightclub, 365 Convention Center Drive. A $25 registration fee includes the ride and after-ride party, or you can pay $25 at the party. Proceeds will benefit the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation's first Camp Cartwheel, a summer day camp for children who have survived a life-threatening illness, and for their siblings.

* GOLF CLASSIC -- The annual Walter Pinjuv Classic golf tournament will be at 7 a.m. July 18 at the Legacy Golf Course. It will benefit Sertoma, a service club working with speech and hearing-impaired children. Nine students are on scholarship to college and seven are being sent to summer camp in Susanville, Calif. Golfers should contact the Sertoma office at 385-4007.

* POKER RUN 1997 -- A "Bikers Bringing Friends Hope" charity run to raise money for the residents of Cheyenne Care Center, a long-term care and skilled facility, will be 8 a.m. June 29 at 2860 E. Cheyenne Ave. The run will begin with free doughnuts and coffee and end with a party at the Cheyenne Saloon, 3103 N. Rancho, which will include food, drinks, live band, raffle and bikini contest. Cost is $10 per bike or $15 per couple.

* SWING AGAINST ARTHRITIS -- Take a swing against arthritis in the 10th annual Las Vegas Arthritis Foundation Golf Classic on Aug. 25 at the prestigious Canyon Gate Country Club. The day-long festivities will benefit the Las Vegas branch of the Arthritis Foundation. Entry fees are $200 per player and include green fees, golf cart rental, unlimited practice balls, a continental breakfast, awards luncheon, live auction and the opportunity to win prizes. Proceeds from this annual tournament support local services, programs and research to find a cure for the many forms of arthritis and to improve the quality of life for those affected by arthritis. * GOLF FOR THE CURE -- The Las Vegas Chapter of the Susan Komen Breast Cancer Foundation will host Golf for the Cure on June 16 at the Las Vegas Country Club. Participation is limited to the first 144 players and entry fees are $250. Tee sponsorships are available for $300. Proceeds will be used by the Las Vegas Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to benefit the community.

Special needs

* CATHOLIC SCHOOL NEEDS -- Bishop Gorman High School, 1801 Maryland Parkway, is having a used-instrument drive this month. The music department is looking for musical instruments collecting dust in your closet. The school also could use many nonmusical items for its music department, such as a portable storage trailer, PA equipment, old stereo, CD tape decks, theater-lighting equipment, electric-extension cables, clothing racks or portable closets. * BLACK & WHITE PARTY -- Generic Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to AIDS awareness, is having a design contest for the invitation and poster for its annual Black & White Party. The party, slated for Sept. 20 at the Clark County Government Center, is a fund-raiser for Aid for AIDS of Nevada. Guests dress in black and white, bring $25 in nonperishables or sundries to be donated to the AFAN Food Bank, and enjoy free beverages, food and entertainment. All ages are encouraged to enter the design contest. Any two-dimensional medium representing the theme, "Generic XI Back 2 Basics," is acceptable. Entry forms are available at AFAN, 2300 S. Rancho Drive. Entries will be accepted through July 11 at AFAN during business hours. For more information, call 382-2326. The first-place winner will be awarded $100 and have his or her design used on the invitations and posters promoting the Black & White Party.

* BOOK DRIVE -- The students at the Meadows Lower School are collecting books to send to independent schools in Grand Forks, N.D., damaged by the spring floods. The books will be collected until the last day of school, June 21, and will be shipped to North Dakota in mid-August. * SKILLED CRAFTSMEN -- All skilled craftsmen are needed including steel stud installers, drywall hangers, finish carpenters, glass installers and electricians to help out in your spare time for M*A*S*H Village, an agency which helps prevent homelessness to families with children.
