Preps: Soccer all-star games on Saturday

Wednesday, June 4, 1997 | 10:33 a.m.

Clark County's premier high school soccer players are on display this weekend at Green Valley High School.

The fifth annual Green Valley Rotary Club All-Star games are Saturday night, with the girls' matchup beginning at 6 and the boys at 8 p.m.

The players are graduated seniors and were nominated and selected to the teams by local coaches as representatives of either the Sunset or Sunrise Division.

Green Valley's Justin Terwilleger and Bishop Gorman's Robby Adams were co-Southern Conference players of the year last fall and they headline the boys' event.

Other players to watch include Bonanza's Joel Armstrong, Green Valley's Leo Cruz, Rancho's Juan Ramirez and Eldorado's Shawn West.

Sarah McCrea of Green Valley, the Sunrise player of the year, along with Chaparral's Jessica Chavez and Kim McClafferty lead that division against the Sunset and standouts Shena Frank of Cimarron-Memorial and Anne Leonard and Tami Shibata, both of Silverado.

Admission to Saturday's games is $3. Tickets may be purchased at the door or from a member of the Green Valley Rotary Club. Proceeds from the event go to GVRC youth programs.

Gatorade plunge

Durango's Alan Webb has been named the Gatorade Circle of Champions high school player of the year. Webb was a pitcher and outfielder for the Trailblazers last season.

Webb and 45 other players were honored by Gatorade. That list of 45 includes Jon Garland of Kennedy High School in Granada Hills, Calif. Garland pitched in Las Vegas earlier this spring during a tournament, and was the 10th overall selection in Major League Baseball's amateur draft on Tuesday.

The Gatorade program is in its 12th year and honors athletes from football, soccer, girls' volleyball, girls' and boys' basketball, baseball, and girls' and boys' track and field.

The national player of the year is Darnell McDonald, a senior outfielder from Cherry Creek (Colo.) High School. The national award is based on a player's overall athletic and academic performance throughout their career.

McDonald led Cherry Creek to three Class 5A state titles and hit .606 with 10 home runs and 35 RBIs this season. He has signed a letter of intent to attend the University of Texas. Gatorade calls McDonald the most decorated athlete in the program's 12 years.

McDonald was the 26th overall choice in the amateur draft. He was taken by Baltimore.

More baseball

Recently crowned state champion Green Valley finished as the ninth-ranked team in the West, according to the latest poll in USA Today. The Gators were rated just ahead of aforementioned Cherry Creek.

Earlier, Bishop Gorman had been ranked as high as No. 6 in the West by the newspaper, but dropped out after a loss to Durango.

The Gators have won five consecutive state championships in Nevada's upper division.
