Labor rallies for bargaining bill

Wednesday, June 4, 1997 | 10:33 a.m.

The state AFL-CIO will conduct an "old-fashioned labor rally" Saturday to urge passage of a bill that would grant collective bargaining rights to state employees.

The rally will be in front of the state's Bradley Building at 2501 E. Sahara Ave. from 9 to 10:30 a.m.

Las Vegas and Clark County employees are already unionized, but efforts to get the same rights for state employees have failed.

"If you have two people with similar jobs, one state and one county employee, the county employee is paid about 20 percent more," said Claude "Blackie" Evans, secretary-treasurer of the Nevada AFL-CIO.

Assembly Bill 310 has already passed the Assembly and has the support of the State of Nevada Employees Association, Service Employees International Union, the Nevada Highway Patrol Association and other unions.

The bill is expected to be heard in the Senate next week. A concurrent rally will be held in front of the legislative building in Carson City.
