Jazz great Joe Williams to perform
Wednesday, June 4, 1997 | 10:33 a.m.
Williams will be accompanied by the 35-piece CCSN Studio Orchestra, conducted by Johnny Pate.
Rising to prominence as a vocalist with the Count Basie Orchestra 46 years ago, Williams has become an international star and the recipient of many awards and honors.
Williams has had many rich experiences over the years, more than 30 albums, television, movies, commercials, countless awards, honorary doctorates of music, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and several appearances with symphony orchestras, something he particularly loves.
"I love the lush sound of all the horns, strings and timpani," says Williams. "My soul soars as all the round tones just roll out with joy. I get so involved in listening that I really don't want it to end."
Williams' current release, "Feel the Spirit," is one that's near and dear to his heart. For many years, he has entertained the thought of recording a spiritual album. "I wanted to give thanks for the privilege and ability to sing for a living," says Williams.
In 1988, CCSN established the Joe Williams Music Scholarship Fun and proceeds from this concert will benefit the student musicians at the college.
General admission is $25. For reservations, call 651-5483.
