12-year-old in critical condition following shooting

Wednesday, June 4, 1997 | 10:34 a.m.

Police say they believe the girl was shot in a drive-by shooting meant for another person who was scheduled to testify in a court case.

"There's talk that it may have been in retaliation for someone testifying about someone else - a snitch situation," said Sgt. Jim Owens of Metro's gang detail.

The victim underwent surgery at University Medical Center to remove a medium-caliber bullet lodged in her back from the drive-by shooting Tuesday night at Rose Warren Elementary School. She was listed in stable but critical condition.

About 10 other youths were with the victim playing basketball on the school playground when a shot passed through the wire fence and hit the girl about 30 yards away.

A 19-year-old was arrested Wednesday in connection with the shooting but was being held on unrelated charges.
