CARSON CITY -- A District Court jury in Clark County has awarded $190,000 to Michelle Schmitz, who claimed she was molested and sexually assaulted while an inmate at the Girls Training Center in Caliente in 1986-87.

Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa said lawyers for Schmitz had asked for $500,000 in damages. She expressed confidence the judgment will further be reduced by the court by $50,000.

Schmitz said she was assaulted by counselor Gary Richey and became pregnant. She gave the baby up for adoption.

Richey denied sexual contact but an investigation said he was the father of the child. Richey was convicted of statutory sexual seduction and served five months of a 10-month sentence in the Lincoln County jail.
