Nye County worried about student’s math abilities

Nearly 70 percent of the fourth graders and about 45 percent of the eighth graders in the sprawling district rank among the bottom half of pupils around the country who took the Terra Nova standardized test.
"Math has been weak in the last couple of years," district community relations director Marijo Rymer told the Pahrump Valley Times.
He said Superintendent Geraldine Harge is committed to improving test scores. As a move in that direction, additional training will be provided for the district's math teachers.
Pupils in the two grades that were officially tested last hovered right around the 50th percentile as expected.
"Math is definitely the main area of concern, but we would like to see some improvement across the board," Harge said.
