Ballet company hires director

A new dance director is hoofing into town.

Bruce Steivel has been hired as the new artistic director of the Nevada Dance Theatre, replacing Vassili Sulich, the company's founder and director for the past 25 years. Steivel will join the company in August.

Currently the director of the Universal Ballet Company in Seoul, South Korea, Steivel's appointment will bring him back to the United States after a 10-year absence. He has also been a ballet master in France and was artistic director of the Bern Ballet in Switzerland and the Hong Kong Ballet Company.

Steivel has performed with numerous dance notables, including George Balanchine and Roland Petit, as well as with the Scottish Ballet, and the Houston, Chicago and Maryland ballets.
