Almost 300 inmates graduate from high school

Tuesday, June 3, 1997 | 11:33 a.m.

"These are people who want to do something for themselves," said Howard Skolnik, assistant director for the Nevada Department of Prisons. "Nobody has to be there."

The 293 graduates, 197 of which received their GED's, participated in ceremonies at the Southern Nevada Correctional Center on Tuesday and ceremonies planned for Wednesday at the Southern Desert Correctional Center in Indian Springs.

The Clark County School District runs high schools at both facilities. The school is voluntary.

Skolnik said the graduations demonstrate the positive side of incarceration and the motivation of inmates to develop skills to succeed in the community.

"We have almost 300 inmates who have had enough concern about their future to pursue an education on their own and are graduating this year," Skolnik said.
