Statistics released on Sunday by the FBI show incidents of violent crime in Reno inched down 2.4 percent in 1996 from the previous year.
While the number of rapes and robberies rose in Reno, overall violent crime was down.
The violent-crime rate represents the total number of murders, rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults per 100,000 population.
Last year, the crime rate in Reno was 703.8, down from 720.3 in 1995, statistics showed.
Reno Police Lt. Steve Pitts said the city's crime rate is lower because of community policing.
"We're identifying problems more effectively," Pitts said. "I think we have a better network."
Nationally, the violent crime rate dropped a record 7 percent from the previous year, the FBI said.
